English II Benchmarks: Performance Task Assessments
As part of the English II curriculum, students will be responsible for completing two benchmark assessments. These assessments will be announced in advance and serve as barometers of student performance and growth in the course. In contrast to the End of Course test, these performance task benchmarks will not be multiple choice; but rather be made up of a research, analysis, and synthesis components that require students to investigate and ultimately argue an informed opinion on a contemporary issue.
Conceptually, the benchmarks are authentic, real-world scenario project-based learning tasks that force students to hone the following skills:
·Reading, writing, speaking, listening, research, argumentation
·Integrate content knowledge, process skills, and time management habits
·Through independent, student-driven research measure:
Ø Depth of understanding
Ø Research skills
Ø Complex analysis
Ø Critical thinking
Ø Student ability to “pull it all together” via graphic organizers, short responses, and a longer argumentative essay
As the semester develops, students and parents may turn to this page for updates regarding benchmark practice and dates. Over the course of the semester, students will become more comfortable with this type of assessment and the skills it measures, ultimately setting them up to be challenged and informed students in both their higher education and the professional world.
